Spotify Users Not Thrilled About Mandatory Facebook Integration

Written By: admin - Sep• 28•11

Back when online music service Spotify first launched in the U.S., users had the option of using their Facebook ID to log in. But that all changed last week, around the same time that Facebook launched their much-derided redesign, and now new Spotify users must use their Facebook ID to log in.

“As most of our users are already social and have already connected to Facebook, it seemed logical to integrate Spotify and Facebook logins,” reads one of several statements issued by Spotify in response to negative user reaction.

Facebook issued the following defense of Spotify’s action:

Spotify chose to provide a social music experience to all of its users so it’s easy to discover music with friends from the get-go. This is similar to how apps built on Facebook work, such as Farmville and Washington Post Reader, where every user is a Facebook user. When users log in to an app with Facebook, the expectation is set upfront that they will be engaging in social mode within the app.

But we’ve received numerous e-mails from readers who are downright angry about this change.

“I kept hearing about how Spotify was better than Pandora and all that,” Steve from CT tells Consumerist. “But I don’t want everything in the world tied to a Facebook account I barely use. And I certainly don’t want everyone seeing what song I’m listening to on Spotify popping up in that ‘ticker’ thing.”

This is all just part of a much larger privacy concern involving Facebook, which not only wants users to share every aspect of their life on the site, but assumes that all users want to share. Over at Lifehacker, there is a they have taken an exhaustive look at these concerns, including how to deal with Steve’s concern about Spotify publicly listing all your listening habits.

Women Who Drink Coffee Have 20% Lower Risk Of Depression

Written By: admin - Sep• 28•11

According to a new study, women who drink caffeinated coffee showed a 20% lower risk of depression than non-coffee drinkers.

The study took 50,739 women in 1996 who had no depressive symptoms and had them answer questionnaires through 2006. They were asked to track their caffeine intake and report if they got diagnosed by a physician for depression or they started taking antidepressants. They were also asked to track their weight, use of hormones, and how much they exercised or smoked, along with other depression risk factors and their overall health.

In the decade of follow-up, 2,607 cases of clinical depression were reported. The women who drank coffee on a regular basis showed a 20% lower risk of depression. What’s more, is that the more coffee they drank, the more the risk of depression decreased.

Earlier studies found that the risk of suicide decreased by more amounts the more coffee was drunk, up to six or seven cups. After eight cups, the risk of suicide started increasing.

While an important study because it was the first large-scale one to look at how drinking coffee affected mental health in women, an editor’s noted that accompanied the article’s publication said, “it seems premature to recommend coffee consumption until studies with methodologies better able to determine causality are conducted.”

Why Did My Walmart Change The ‘Use By’ Date On My Beef?

Written By: admin - Sep• 28•11

What’s a grocery store to do when an expensive piece of beef goes unsold by the time it’s reached its “Use/Freeze By” date? Consumerist reader William believes he caught his Walmart simply slapping a new sticker with a new date on top of the old one.

Last Saturday, William went to Walmart and paid $31.19 for a 15 lb. beef brisket, but…

Once I arrived home I noticed there was a second label barely visible underneath the top one. I carefully removed the top label and noticed it was for the exact same weight and price. The original “USE/FREEZE BY” date was 9/19/11. The beef was then re-labeled with a “USE/FREEZE BY” date of 9/30/11.

I attempted to contact the store manager; however, I was told to leave a message and they would get back to me. I haven’t heard anything yet.

We know that a number of you work at, or have worked at, supermarkets. Perhaps there is a not-as-icky reason the store might have done this? If so, feel free to share in the comments.
